Absolutely Essential Organizing Tools – Honorable Mentions

by Laurel Plum

Essential Tools This is the last article for now in our series detailing the essential tools necessary to have on hand as you are starting to get organized. Last week we talked about calendars, notebooks, file folders, stop watches and shoe organizers. This week I have suggested baskets and Happy CD’s. The first seven tools I have written about I use almost every time I work on any decluttering project. Today I am going to list a few honorable mentions. These are items that I really like to have on hand and use very often, but may or may not be essential for the task at hand.

Honorable Mention Number One – Baggies

I love the lunch bags and storage bags that have a zipper on them. They are super convenient and pretty inexpensive for keeping sorted stuff together until if/when another home can be found. Sometimes when going through a space, such as your junk drawer, you can not immediately find another home or container for items.  By using these little bags to sort and store like with like, an improvement can still be made that will save you time later.  They come in many different sizes. I try to keep the sandwich size and the next larger size on hand at all times.  I even use them to keep some of my craft projects together and clean when working on them.

Honorable Mention Number Two – Permanent markers

Try to have a couple of permanent marking pens available for projects. These are really handy. I splurged and bought a handy little label maker.  I love it, but still use the permanent markers just as often.

Honorable Mention Number Three – A Recycle Bin

I have a more detailed article on recycle bins that will be on the site in a few days.  All of the other tools deal with found items that you want to keep.  But the bin is one method of dealing with the stuff that is headed out the door. The only reason this is not an absolutely essential tool is because of the scale of decluttering. Occasionally a large truck bed, a dumpster, or even a moving truck may be needed to haul everything away. It depends on if you are doing your desk, a room, or the whole house.

Your Tools

What other tools do you use during decluttering that you consider to be absolutely essential? Please share them with me in the comments. I am always looking for good ideas.

I never thought about using baggies. I get so frustrated when I find little pieces of scrap papers and small items when I’m cleaning up that I just end up making a pile of more junk. This is a way to at least give them “a place” for when I have time to sort through them.

@Connie: Also try a shoe organizer.
