Absolutely Essential Organizing Tools Part 6 - Baskets

by Laurel Plum

This is the sixth article in a series detailing the essential tools necessary to have on hand as you are starting to get organized. Last week we talked about calendars, notebooks, file folders, stop watches, and shoe organizers. Today we move on through my list to talk about baskets.

Sea Grass Lined Basket -<br/> Set of 3I love baskets. They are extremely handy to use while you are sorting and to permanently store things in. I have a whole collection of various sized baskets displayed on top of my kitchen cabinets. Whenever I need to stash or store something prettily I pull one down that is the right size and shape.

I also have several extra sturdy plastic laundry baskets. I shopped around, found a place where I could get them reasonably, and picked up a few here and there until I had a very generous stack. These are great because when I am not using them for a project, they nest so neatly under my actual laundry baskets in my laundry closet. If they get wet, they do not fall apart like boxes. They do not leak or break like bags would. And best of all, I can hose them down if I need to. Look around and see if you have something like these around. I suggest that you have several available.

Throughout the challenges and articles on this website, I will say to “grab your basket”.  It doesn’t really have to be either of these kinds of baskets, just as long as you do have something to hold random stuff as you are working on an area. You could use any medium to large container or tote. Several decent sized boxes you pick up for free on your next grocery trip may work fine. When you figure out what you want to use, find a specific home for them somewhere. They will be ready when you need them and then you can return them at the end of the assignment.

Your Baskets

I’d love to hear what containers you like to use or any funny stories of what you have used in the past. Will you share in the comments?
