I use those snap top containers that are square to put rice in since I use 3 different types, they stack well and I can see how much is in them, since they are clear. Secondly I put plastic drawers (rubbermaid) type in the bottom for my potatoes and onions, they allow air to circulate and allow easy clean up and easy to see. I can pull out and get what I need. I put hay in the bottom for better storage, they kind that I use to feed my rabbits.

You know those cartons you get oranges and clementines in? The four corners come up higher than the sides, so it's easy to see inside them even if they're stacked. I use those to store bags of baking things that don't stack well - powdered sugar, brown sugar, chocolate chips, etc.
