Quick Tip – Hooks in the Kitchen

by Laurel Plum

Cup Hook

Adding hooks in the kitchen could really help you with tasks and storage.

The other day I mentioned that I used a simple hook under my sink to hold a dustpan set.  You can add several types of hooks all over your kitchen to really maximize convenience and the way you store items. These little workers are one of my favorite additions to the kitchen and bathroom and I am always looking for new ways to use them.

I thought I would share some possible ideas with you.  Let me know of other ways you utilize them in your spaces!

Uses for a Simple Cup Hook

  • To hold coffee mugs under the upper cabinets.
  • In the pan cabinet on the door to hold small sauce pans and small frying pans.
  • Under the sink to hold a dustpan, a compost bag, or a dish rag.
  • To hold measure spoons and measuring cups inside the cabinet doors or decoratively on the wall.
  • To hold silverware baskets on the cabinet door as a spice rack.
  • To hold key rings out of sight.

Uses for a Single Wall Hook

Single Wall Hook

The single wall hook that most of us usually think of only to hold coats or bath robes can be used in the kitchen, too.

  • On the side of the cabinet next to your sink to drape a clean hand towel.
  • On the wall beside the stove or oven to hold hot pads.
  • To hold a basket that holds a notepad for the grocery list, dry erase markers, mail, your small reading pile, or any other number of things.
  • To hold that one pan you seem to use for every meal

You can pick them to be as pretty and decorative as you want, just know in advance what you to intend to hang from them.  Some of the pretty knobs and ends may be too big to fit some of the things you would hang.  Make sure the items have holes that are large enough to slip over the ends of the hook or that you could tie a ribbon or other little loop on the item that is large enough. For example, if your hot pads have decorative loops on them, the size of those loops will either determine the size of the hook ends or you may need to use your sewing skills to alter them to fit.

Other Alternatives

If the idea of putting holes in your cabinets terrifies you, look into using ones that do not need screws. Examples:

Instead of using single wall hooks, you can also use several mounted on a pretty board to make a set.  You could even use decorative racks meant for keys. The decorations on most of them will add whimsy and reduce the number of screw holes in your wall or cabinets.  Just make sure they will hold the weight of your items.
